Go in your garage.  Pick up an old can of paint that you have stored awhile ago when at the time you thought you might need to use it at a later date.  Look at the back of the can and find the VOC content limit, usually in g/L, and read off how much volatile organic compound the paint contains.

Green Seal, an independent non-profit organization providing science-based environmental certification standards for paints and other products, recommends these limits.

Volatile organic compounds are carbon compounds used as a solvent in paints, sealants, and coatings.  It is also found in most carpets, particleboards, glue, adhesives, wood furnishings, insulation, and other building materials used for construction.  It is highly toxic and can be carcinogenic.

As a solvent it helps dissolve other liquids contained in the paint.  In addition, VOC is used to increase the paint's durability and longevity by repelling stains.  But it is also emitted into the atmosphere while the paint is being used, and to a lesser degree, while it is stored.  Take notice of the strong odor next time when you paint with conventional paint containing VOC.  What is occurring is the compounds are being released as the paint dries.

The health effects are dependent on how long you've been exposed, the nature of the VOC, and the level of exposure.  Studies have shown through long periods of exposure to highly toxic VOC can caused cancer, liver and kidney damage, asthma, and damage to the central nervous system.  Short term effects may be dizziness, headaches, eye and skin irritation, and nausea.

The paint industry has taken noticed of the health effects caused by volatile organic compounds and have made great strides in their research and development by making better products.  There are a wide variety of non-VOC and low-VOC paints on the market.  But like everything that is good for you there will be a price.  Although it may be well worth the cost considering yours and your family's health.
